Cupcakes in London

The Cupcake Company on Kensington Church Street opened in September 2009, and is a delight of a shop to add to my ever growing collection of cupcake reviews! Set in the leafy backdrop of West London, it provides a welcome relief from the hustle and bustle of nearby Portobello Market and the every popular Hummingbird Bakery. Clearly a baking extravaganza, it is the sight of several ladies icing furiously that welcomes you in when first entering the shop.

They too have caught on to the popular red velvet cupcake recipe, and my word, do they do that to perfection. A slightly fatter and dare I say more satisfying version of Hummingbird’s, this is divine at it’s greatest. He went straight for the giant slab of chocolate brownie (what a bloke), gloriously displayed in the shop window. Heavy and bound to give you a chocolate heart attack, this is not for the faint hearted, and a cup of tea is recommended to swallow the beast down.

The one thing I will say is that the customer service was rather pushy – we had barely entered the shop for five seconds when we were forced to make a swift decision about what we wanted to buy from the rather over bearing cupcake ‘matriarch’. It was also a shame there wasn’t anywhere to sit to soak in cupcakey atmosphere. However, it did force out an excellent decision, and I was definitely not regretful.

It is also clear that the shop takes many birthday/wedding/party orders, and not just of the cupcake variety. We saw several Barbie themed cakes (highly impressive artwork there) and some 18th birthday cupcakes on the go. These are some passionate cake people we’re dealing with here. Definitely worth a trip to Kensington for.
