London’s Quirky Street Names

London is home to a lot of strange, rude and amusing street names some of which are too random to seem possible! Some of London’s street names are also pretty blue and graphic as they relate to old streets of ye olde London.

Most of the street names in London are bi-products of their surrounding areas and relate to age old activities in the areas. Such as Spitalfields which, is called this because it was where the old plague hospital fields used to be in Victorian Britain.

A lot of the street names here also seem to relate to London’s military past such as Gun Street, Gunpowder Square and Artillery Corner. Perhaps these are on the grounds of old military haunts and battle grounds of ye olden days.

As there are so some many streets, lanes and passages in London you seem to notice another funny or odd name every time you are walking around the city. Obviously there are a lot more than the names mentioned here but probably too many mention without some serious time being spent documenting them all.

Most of these street names I spotted while walking around London and I decided to put them into one list as they made me laugh and I figured they would probably gome someone else some giggles. I have added the Google maps just in case anyone doubted whether or not they are actually real or not. I have to say some in particular to beg belief such as Barnet Grove, which I have to admit made me think of Amy Winehouse!

Other favourites of mine are Winkley and Tooley Streets which are funny just because they are ridiculous! Why do these streets have such stupid names?
